Biffo the Bear & Korky the Cat
Biffo and Korky - long-time front page stars for the Beano and Dandy respectively - are a delight to screenprint. The bold features and clean outlines of the drawings and the bright colours of the front pages make them very good subjects for the medium. Biffo was on the front cover of The Beano starting from 1948 and he lasted there until 1974, when Dennis the Menace took over. Biffo was originally drawn by Dudley D Watkins but David Sutherland took over in 1969. I'm a sucker for anthropomorphic characters, but Biffo's human friend Buster, who arrived in the 1950s, is a terrific character too. I love his hat. Korky was The Dandy's original cover star and stayed there from issue 1, dated 4 December 1937, until 1984, when after 47 continuous years, Korky was replaced on the front by Desperate Dan. He has a sort of sardonic style that I find very appealing.
